FIRE is a math problem dressed up as a lifestyle. The math is simple: save a high percentage of your income, invest it in low-cost index funds, and the compounding does the rest. The lifestyle is where it gets hard — and where most FIRE blog posts skip the honest discussion.

This guide is the honest version: the actual math, the four variants of FIRE that different people pursue, the 4% rule and its limits, and the real psychological and healthcare challenges that pre-retirement FIRE blogs rarely talk about.


The core math — savings rate determines everything

The single most important number in FIRE planning is your savings rate: the share of after-tax income you save and invest. It collapses every other variable into one outcome — how long until you're financially independent.

Two implications: first, income matters less than you think — a person making $200K with a 20% savings rate retires later than a person making $80K with a 40% rate. Second, getting from 40% to 50% saving is much harder than getting from 10% to 20% — and the time savings get smaller at the high end.


The four variants of FIRE

Lean FIRE — minimal expenses

Target: $25K–$45K/year in expenses; portfolio target ~$625K–$1.1M. Often involves geographic arbitrage (lower cost-of-living region or country), house hacking, or living very simply. Highest risk of single-shock disruption — one medical event can derail decades of planning.

Fat FIRE — comfortable lifestyle

Target: $100K–$200K+/year in expenses; portfolio target ~$2.5M–$5M+. The conventional "wealthy early retiree." Requires very high earnings during the accumulation phase (tech, finance, medicine, business owner). Lower lifestyle adjustment in retirement.

Coast FIRE — save now, coast later

Save aggressively in your 20s and 30s — enough that, with zero further contributions, compound growth alone gets you to a traditional-retirement portfolio at 65. You then still work, but only to cover current expenses. Reduces the pressure dramatically once you hit the "coast" number.

Example math:$250K saved by age 35 + 30 years at 7% real return ≈ $1.9M at age 65. If $1.9M supports your target retirement spending, you've coasted. You don't need to save another dollar — though most people do anyway.

Barista FIRE — part-time work bridges

Build enough portfolio to cover most expenses, then take a part-time job (often specifically for the health insurance) that covers the rest. Reduces the portfolio target significantly because you don't need to bridge healthcare independently.


The 4% rule — what it actually says

The 4% rule comes from the Trinity Study (1998), which tested whether a retiree could withdraw 4% of their starting portfolio (inflation-adjusted) and not run out of money over a 30-year retirement. The historical data said yes for most rolling 30-year periods in US stock and bond markets.

Practical application:

  • Year 1: withdraw 4% of your starting portfolio.
  • Subsequent years: withdraw the same dollar amount, adjusted for inflation.
  • Don't recalculate 4% on the new portfolio balance each year — that's a different rule.

The honest caveats:

  • 30 years, not 50. The original study tested 30-year retirements. For FIRE retirees who may need 50+ years, the safe withdrawal rate drops — Wade Pfau and Big ERN have published work suggesting 3.25–3.5% for very long horizons.
  • US-centric data. The Trinity Study used US returns 1926–1995. Other developed markets had worse outcomes; future US returns might too.
  • Sequence-of-returns risk. A bad market in years 1–5 of retirement is much worse than the same bad market in years 25–30. Some FIRE retirees keep 2–3 years of expenses in cash specifically to weather sequence risk.
  • Flexibility matters. The 4% rule assumes rigid spending. Real retirees adjust — cutting discretionary spending in down years extends portfolio life considerably.

How to execute — the tactical playbook

  1. Calculate your number. Annual expenses × 25 for a 4% rule baseline, × 28-30 for a more conservative buffer.

  3. Low-cost index funds. A 3-fund or 2-fund portfolio (US total market + international + bonds) captures 95% of available risk-adjusted return at near-zero cost. Vanguard, Fidelity, and Schwab all sell the building blocks.
  4. Automate it. Auto-transfer on paycheck day. Behavioral inertia is the single biggest leak in FIRE plans.
  5. Track expenses honestly. Without an accurate expense number, you can't set the right portfolio target. A real budgeting app for 12 months gives you the data.
  6. Reassess annually. Income changes, expense baselines shift, market valuations move. The plan you set at 28 needs an update at 35.

Where to actually invest the money

The core FIRE portfolio is usually:

  • 60–80% US/global equity index funds — VTI/VOO/FZROX type holdings.
  • 20–40% bonds or bond funds — closer to bonds as you near financial independence.
  • 0–10% alternatives if you want them — REIT, international tilt, factor tilt.

The platforms most FIRE-pursuers use:

  • Fidelity — zero-fee index funds (FZROX/FZILX), best HSA in the country, strong cash sweep.
  • Vanguard — original low-cost index fund pioneer; iconic VTSAX/VTIAX.
  • Schwab — competitive on funds; thinkorswim for any occasional trading; global product breadth.
  • Betterment or Wealthfront — if you want it all automated (tax-loss harvesting, rebalancing) for 0.25%/year.

What FIRE blogs underweight

  • Healthcare. Pre-Medicare (age 65), you're on the ACA marketplace, on a spouse's plan, or part-time-employed for benefits. Budget $15K–$25K/year per couple.
  • Identity loss. Many FIRE retirees report a 6–18 month adjustment crisis after retiring early. Work provides structure, identity, and social connection that the portfolio doesn't replace.
  • The accumulation phase is bleak for some. Saving 50%+ of income for a decade means saying no to a lot of things in your 20s and 30s. People who can stomach that aren't the same as people who can't.
  • Sequence-of-returns risk. A 35% market drawdown in year 2 of retirement materially changes the math. Cash buffers, flexibility, or barista FIRE all help.
  • Lifestyle inflation in retirement. Many retirees find their spending increases (travel, hobbies) for the first 5–10 years before settling. Plan for it.

The bottom line

FIRE is real, the math works, and the playbook is well-trodden: save aggressively, invest in low-cost index funds, target 25× expenses (or more for very long horizons), and stay flexible.

The harder parts aren't the math. They're the decade of high savings, the psychological shift after retirement, the healthcare bridge to Medicare, and the sequence-of-returns risk that traditional retirement frameworks don't emphasize enough.

For most readers, even "partial" FIRE — saving 30% instead of 10% and retiring at 55 instead of 65 — is a massive quality-of-life upgrade. Don't let the all-or-nothing framing of the movement obscure that.

What are Lean FIRE, Fat FIRE, Coast FIRE, and Barista FIRE?
Lean FIRE = retire on minimal expenses, often $40K/year or less for a couple. Fat FIRE = retire on a comfortable lifestyle, often $100K+/year. Coast FIRE = save enough by age 35-ish that compound growth alone gets you to traditional retirement at 65 with zero additional contributions — you still work, but only to cover current expenses. What about healthcare? It's the biggest hole in FIRE plans.
Real concern. The ACA marketplace is the primary path for pre-Medicare FIRE retirees, with premium subsidies based on income. Health-share ministries are a controversial cheaper option but lack insurance regulation. Some FIRE retirees use Barista FIRE specifically to get employer health insurance. Plan for $15,000–$25,000/year per couple for ACA premiums + deductibles + out-of-pocket.
Is FIRE actually possible on an average income?
Barely, and the math is unforgiving. The savings rate is the dominant lever. At a 20% savings rate, working career length is ~37 years; at 50%, ~17 years; at 70%, ~9 years. On a median U.S. household income (~$78K in 2024), saving 50%+ requires either very low cost-of-living geography, dual incomes, or extreme frugality. FIRE works easier above ~$120K household income.
